The incorrect assumption about social media

Everybody thinks you need an incredibly strong social media presence for your business because that’s the future of everything.

Start a business… start an Instagram page. Start a business… start a Facebook page. Start a business… start a LinkedIn page. Etc…

The reality is that gaining and maintaining a social media following requires a lot of work engaging with your community.

Before you dive headfirst down that rabbit hole, ask yourself why you want the social media accounts in the first place.

The final answer to the question will probably be that yes, you should get the accounts and that yes, you will be able to grow your business using those accounts.

But, consider what would happen if you had none of them.

Ask yourself the following 3 questions:

  1. What sort of people should know about you?
  2. What sort of things would you tell those people?
  3. What do you want them to do when they know about you?

Social media channels are incredible opportunities to generate real interest in what you’re doing, but the strategy has to come first.

Only when you have an objective in mind can you actually use the channels to get what you want.
