Will Smith has a wonderful saying that “if you can’t beat fear, just do it scared”.
The strength in this statement is that it builds over time. Once you have been scared and pushed through the fear, there will always be other moments when you feel scared again, but the most important thing is that you will know that you have pushed through fear successfully in the past.
While we can look at others who have done incredible things and say to ourselves, “well if they can do it, so can I”, in the moment of pure terror, we can easily say to ourselves that we are not those people. The terror introduces doubt and we can tell ourselves that we are simply just different from them.
The power in understanding Will’s perception of fear is when we learn how to overcome the fear ourselves through our own actions. Through this, we build the authority within ourselves that we can do it again and again.
