Don’t sacrifice your content for your title

There are various studies that show that click-through rates for titles that start with “10 steps to..” and “5 steps to…” do generate more clicks than other numbers. However, there is never any need to have “10 steps to do X” or “5 ways to do Y”.

If you have 4 or 8 or 11 steps then say so. Your audience is going to have a hard time remembering more than three anyway, so focus on getting the information correct and understandable, not extended or squeezed to sound better for your title.

This is especially true if you are presenting live in front of an audience not generating content for the internet as there is no need to even worry about your click-through rate in this case.
