Clients want you to think - clients need you to ask questions

It’s not the client’s job to specify exactly what they want and how they want it done.

It’s the client’s job to set their objectives. It’s the consultant/ designer/ engineer/ advisor’s job to find the best solution that achieves those objectives.

That means that if you’re working for a client, the most important thing isn’t to find out exactly what they want done. The most important thing is to identify why they want it done. This requires a lot of questions but it tells you the actual objectives.

After that, it’s your job to figure out the best way for them to achieve those objectives.
