It’s not the client’s job to specify exactly what they want and how they want it done.
It’s the client’s job to set their objectives. It’s the consultant/ designer/ engineer/ advisor’s job to find the best solution that achieves those objectives.
That means that if you’re working for a client, the most important thing isn’t to find out exactly what they want done. The most important thing is to identify why they want it done. This requires a lot of questions but it tells you the actual objectives.
After that, it’s your job to figure out the best way for them to achieve those objectives.
