Are you giving yourself too much time?

If there’s a task that needs to be done, but you have no idea how long it’s going to take you, it can seem natural to just start.

We tell ourselves that we’ll get it done when we get it done and we allow ourselves as much time as necessary to do it.

This will eventually work.

However, during that unknown time period, you will also not be completely focused on anything else.

The simple solution to this is to assign yourself a fixed number of hours for the task.

You don’t have to get it done within that time period, but you do have to stop once the time period is over. You can continue this for as many days as needed.

This makes you more productive in two ways:

  1. You are more motivated to get as much done when you know that you only have X hours to keep working on it
  2. When you stop, you can dedicate yourself to other tasks with full attention
